Civil War effects on Somalia
My name is Maria Ahmed, and I am from Somaliland, northern Somalia. I have been interested in the refugee resettlement process, and especially why Somali refugees live or move to places like Maine and Minnesota- places with extremely different climate from thier home country.

Fleeing home as result of the horrific results of the civil war, many Somalis ended up in refugee camps or were resettled in other countries as refugees. United States is one of the countries that offered third country resettlement to Somali refugees. After their initial placement, Somali Refugees in the United States tend to live or move to places like Maine and Minnesota as secondary migrants. This project explores the leading causes of why Somali refugee secondary migrants move. By looking in to the personal stories of selected Somali refugees, this project shows three recurring reasons that cause the Somali refugee secondary migration. This migration is caused by perceived economic profits of their new destination, search for safety and security and search for network of community to rely on.
